Arc-Flash Hazard Analysis
TARGET ISSUE
Plant modifications made by untrained individuals is just one of several things that can result in serious injuries when electrical equipment virtually explodes because it was designed with inadequate capacity to handle the magnitude of short circuit energy in the system.
ABOUT THE SOLUTION
Arc-Flash hazard analysis addresses the protection of personnel, plant and equipment and brings the necessary recommendations for safety code compliance.
Conducting an arc-flash analysis can be the difference between life and death. They are required by electrical safety codes and enforcement agencies and insurers will also want to know how facility planners and operations managers take system protection into account. Potential consequences include losses to production levels, equipment investments or life and limb.
An arc flash can be deadly at worst but cause severe injuries at least. The electric arc has recorded temperatures as high as 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Failures occur within electrical distribution systems due to operator error, aging equipment, poor protection systems, untested and under-rated equipment or unidentified fault contributing aspects. What is also very important for owners, managers and operators to know is that it isn’t just “rookies” that get singed by an arc blast. Studies have shown that most victims were in a hurry and took a short cut. More often than not they had the necessary experience to know better.
Training, supervision and regulatory practices go a long way to preventing injury but the most important step is an arc-flash analysis, conducted using the right software and tools. Using “generalized” math tables, for instance, is just not good enough when electrical equipment can virtually explode causing extreme heat, UV light, flying shrapnel and a tremendous pressure wave.
Few people are equipped or capable of doing an arc-flash hazard analysis. Actemium deploys state of the art computational software for modelling power systems alongside extensive manufacturing and electrical system expertise. Our study will map the severity of hazard levels and make recommendations to bring the facility to electrical safety codes, removing unknown risk.
